2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season Overview (Part Two)

Previously we began to deliver an overview of this year’s hurricane season lasting from June to November. We discussed data and predictions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) leading to predictions of 1 to 4 major hurricanes, with 2 already occurring. In this second part, we will continue giving an overview of this current Atlantic Hurricane season.

While the outlooks of this season compared to previous years is still yet to be seen, so far it is relatively calmer in terms of quantity of storms. In recent years, forecasters ran out of names for storms and had to utilize a back up list, with 2020 having a record 30 named storms occurring.

This can be explained due to this season being in the El Nino storm pattern. This pattern began in June and leads to increased wind shear, meaning the change in wind speed from the ocean into the atmosphere. A higher shear makes conditions for creating hurricanes less likely.
