There have been numerous landmark hurricanes that have devastated the United States throughout history, one of the most infamous we will discuss. In this article we will be discussing one of the most powerful hurricanes to strike the United States- Hurricane Andrew.


Hurricane Andrew made landfall on August 24, 1992, which left a significant mark on the state of Florida. Hurricane Andrew was a category 5 hurricane with wind speeds greater than 165 mph. Andrew initially formed from a tropical wave off the west coast of Africa and gradually formed into a tropical storm near the Bahamas. Due to the warm sea temperatures the tropical storm quickly intensified into a hurricane. Hurricane Andrew was known for having a powerful, compact size which left devastating effects on specific locations.

Hurricane Andrew made landfall in Homestead, Florida, leaving entire neighborhoods and well-constructed buildings obliterated. Hurricane Andrew left thousands of people homeless, with economic losses surpassing $25 Billion. Although Hurricane Andrew was catastrophic it left a legacy of advancements in hurricane preparedness, response, and building resilience.
